Bookmaking for Everyone with Dave DiMarchi

Saturday, July 27th, 10am-4pm

Members: $140, Non-Members: $155 Material Fee: $30

Handmade book structure with polygon shaped pages printed with white text on brown and orange pages.

Become familiar with the tools, materials, and tricks of the book-binding trade! Explore contemporary bookbinding to create multiple book structures for highly personalized soft and hardcover books—ideal for journals, sketchbooks and artist books. Every artist will create a suite of beautiful handmade books, and gain all the knowledge needed to explore binding in their own work. Beginners welcome and encouraged! All bookbinding materials provided.

Students provide:

  • Pencil and something in which to take notes
  • Pair of scissors and Xacto or utility knife
  • One half-yard (18x30”) piece of lightweight cotton fabric*: Think natural fibers, nothing with stretch/polyester, nothing beaded, textured or quilted. Standard quilting-weight fabric (like that found at stores like Joann), or cotton (not jersey) bedsheets are ideal. The fabric will be ironed—so it will need to stand up to some heat as well. For ease, I would avoid anything with hard geometry, like plaid or stripes.
  • Three pieces of decorative paper (minimum 12x18” each): Something soft and easily foldable, but heavier weight than tissue, not transparent or translucent, can be patterned/printed; nothing glossy or non- absorbent. These papers will serve as covers and endsheets (interior pages between our book blanks and each book’s cover) for a variety of books. You may want at least one option that pairs well with your supplied fabric.
  • Any bookmaking tools you may already have (bone folder, awl, cutting mat, etc.; these tools will also be provided to you for this workshop by the instructor; you do not need to purchase these if you do not already own them; if you do provide your own, please make sure they are labeled with your name or in some way identifiable).

About the Instructor:

Dave DiMarchi is a queer, multi-disciplinary artist working in printmaking, papermaking, and sculptural book forms. Nurturing ideas into singular and editioned works, he engages in a relentless research and material practice. As a multi-disciplinary artist, he has exhibited works on paper, installations, and books in the US and internationally. In addition to teaching printmaking, papermaking, and book forms throughout the New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania area, he maintains a small collaborative studio and art space in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Through his Autumn 2022 Arts Council of Princeton’s Anne Reeves Artist Residency, he developed a practice of collage-based multimedia and print works. He also serves as the Arts Council’s Judith K. Brodsky Printmaking Studios Manager and Master Printer. For nearly 15 years, he has created his own work, curated exhibitions, provided print exchange opportunities, and published fine art prints as 9INHANDPRESS, a fine art printmaking and educational studio located in New Hope, Pennsylvania. www.9inhandpress.com
