    Members: $15 Non-Members: $25 Materials: You Provide

Open Studios is a monthly event designed for community members to come together and create. It is not a led class, but rather an opportunity for those who have taken other classes to continue their creative process. During these sessions, up to five people can work in the studio at a time. To reserve equipment and workspace, participants must sign up online.

This three-hour event allows participants to work on their projects while creating alongside others. It is not a class for learning new techniques, but it is a chance to build upon previous classes, skills, and techniques.

A print-shop monitor will be present during the sessions to oversee equipment usage and answer general questions. The monitor can guide equipment usage, but will not offer detailed technical instructions or demonstrations.

If you're looking to learn new skills or techniques, please visit our website for more information on our courses and one-on-one technical services.

We hope to see you at Open Studios soon!

Paper Marbling Experience with Keith Garubba

    Saturday, May 11th, 12pm-3pm

    Members: $120, Non-Members: $135, Materials Included

Freshly marbled papers drying on yard sticks.

Experience the magic of marbling decorative and abstract papers with this easy-to-pick-up introductory workshop to a centuries old practice.

Your single session hands-on class will be so much more than a painting party: you'll have the opportunity to follow your curiosity as you experience the spontaneous magic of paper marbling and also learn how to control classic, intricate patterns.

You’ll be walked through all the techniques you need to make mesmerizing designs in 16 specially prepared colors of the season.

    In this workshop you will:

    • Create 10 marbled papers, 12” x 19”, yours to keep.

    • Learn 4 (or more) cool patterns fundamental to marbling.

    • Explore spontaneity in freestyle marble designs.

    • Build on the skills you learn to create floral and other imagery on water.

1 Ticket to this event reserves your own marbling station, set of tools, and 10 marble-ready sheets of paper.

Don’t let the fun stop after your marbling session. Once you’ve taken this workshop, you might wonder what you can do with your stack of marbled papers! Marbling is beautiful on its own, but these papers can also be the perfect touch to amplify your bookmaking or printing projects. Bring your marbled papers to a future session at Frontline Arts and you’ll have a head start on your masterpiece.

Take this class over and over: every class will be slightly different with seasonal colors, alternating patterns, and opportunities for you to make new discoveries on your own.

    About the Instructor:

Keith Garubba creates spirited abstract visual artworks on paper, glass, and panel to inspire playful contemplation. Formally trained as a printmaker, he uses graphic techniques to build colorful worlds of pattern.

Garubba was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1987. He fell in love with storytelling early, surrounded by brothers and friends who were collaborators in comic book and video projects. Drawing became his voice. At Keystone College he studied visual arts, meeting mentors who inspired his curiosity and gave him a foundation of principles and craft. He graduated from Keystone College as the Outstanding Graduate in 2010. In 2014, he earned his Masters of Fine Arts from The Ohio State University, where his mind was opened to contemporary ways of working and ideas that would fuel work for years. The artist returned to Pennsylvania that year, where he built his studio and began working in the Lehigh Valley, creating his artwork and teaching art in all contexts and all ages. Garubba was awarded the Arts Ovation Award as Emerging Artist of the Year by the Allentown Arts Commission in 2016; he felt he had a home-base for his art, and a community in which he could grow.

His works are exhibited regularly throughout the US. He holds leadership roles in regional arts organizations, and recently served as President of the Printmakers Society of the Lehigh Valley from 2018 to 2022. Visiting higher education institutions across the country as a visiting artist offering talks and workshops is one of his honors and joys. He is a resident artist at the Banana Factory in Bethlehem, where he holds a studio, participates in community activities, and teaches private lessons. Garubba continues to make work in marbled paper, glass, printmaking, paint, multimedia installations, and interactive performance.

    Wednesdays, May 15th, 22nd, and 29th

    6pm-8:30pm

    Members: $170, Non-Members: $185

    Material Fee: $67

Discover the image-making, layering, and color possibilities of reduction linocut printmaking, while learning the tips and tricks of this challenging medium. Working with simple tools and techniques, as well as exploring the possibilities of color, artists will create an edition of three (or more)-color prints over three sessions. Some experience is suggested; beginners are welcome.

    Students provide:

    One Speedball (or similar) Linoleum Cutting Handle + Gouges (1, 2, 3, 5 & 6)

Resource images: The imagery you provide can be as simple as clip art-style, to something more complex like a photograph, writing, a constructed image/collage, or you can work abstractly. Whatever direction you choose, you’ll be working with this same image throughout our time together. You should provide the imagery printed out onto standard copy/printer paper in either color or grayscale/black and white, at 5x7”. Of course, you are also welcome to work directly on the block after seeing the demonstration and sample images. You may find yourself inspired to work more off the cuff once at the workshop. The more variety of resource images you provide, the better, as some images may not work for this process.

    • Apron

    • Pencil + Eraser and something in which to take notes

    • Extra Fine Point Sharpie

    • One Pad 9x12” Newsprint for transporting prints to and from the studio
