    Relief Printing on the Letterpress with Dave DiMarchi

    Saturdays April 13 & 27, 10am-4pm

    Includes 12 hours of FREE studio time

    This introductory quick-and-easy relief printing course will explore designing, transferring and carving an image onto a linoleum block for a multiple-color printed edition. Using Frontline Arts’ Vandercook Letterpress, artists will dive into printing their blocks rapidly—letting the Vandercook tackle all the hard parts of printing. Registering second and third colors, and creating a beautifully-printed editions is a breeze! Artists can expect to print an edition of 20 multiple-color, 11x15” prints. All skill levels welcome and encouraged!

    The benefit will be held inside the picturesque Hunterdon Art Museum, a former 19th century stone mill overlooking the Raritan River and Waterfall. We will enjoy a lovely and unique sit-down catered meal, inclusive of dessert, an incredible silent auction full of tantalizing items up for bid to benefit Frontline Arts’ programming, an interactive wine pull full of an array of lovely wines, and spoken word storytelling to saturate our minds. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to our highly collaborative story creation this evening, where on the large pages of our handmade and bound paper, you will be asked to contribute to the narrative of characters throughout the evening, creating a community story, bound by creation and full of adventure!

    The indoor museum space will also be available for full private viewing of three floors of exhibitions.

    Ever been curious about Letterpress printing, but not sure you’re ready to jump in to a longer class? How about freeing yourself for a couple of hours over lunch? While Letterpress printing can take a lifetime to master, this free midday workshop will help you produce great results quickly and easily! Whether you’re new to letterpress or know your way around a Vandercook, you’ll enjoy printing with Frontline’s collection of wood and lead type, getting you prepared to jump into a longer class head first! No experience necessary

    Akua Carborundum Gel with Wax Mediums with Caren Friedman

    Saturday Jun 8, 10-4pm

    ​Includes 6 hours of FREE studio time

    Learn to use non-toxic Akua Carborundum Gel to create quick and easy printmaking plates for small editions. This process yields a rich velvety surface which can be worked into using dark-field reductive techniques (like a monotype or mezzotint) or positively with a faux-litho drawing technique. Working from sketches or photographs, students will use a variety of mark-making tools to manipulate their plates which will be coated with a layer of carborundum layer gel.  Students will print their images using Akua Intaglio inks. Open to beginners and experienced printmakers alike.

    Quick & Dirty Letterpress Broadsides with Dave DiMarchi

    Wednesdays June 12 & 19, 10-4pm

    This workshop introduces the art and craft of letterpress printing of experimental, purpose-driven broadsides and posters. Using handset wood and metal type, along with other relief printing elements, artists will design and hand-print broadside/poster projects in small editions on the Vandercook press. The workshop will consist of technical demonstrations on setting type, inking and multiple color layer letterpress printing, and various simple image-printing processes. Employing less-toxic techniques and minimal chemical cleanup, this class is ideal for dipping your toes into Letterpress printing! Beginners welcome and encouraged!

    Frontline Paper for Non-Veterans with Kevin Basl and Dave Keefe

    Everyone is connected to the military, regardless of whether you wore the uniform.Perhaps your grandfather served or your mother or a sibling. As a citizen, your military gets funded by your taxes and deployed in your name. War affects everyone. While Frontline Paper workshops are usually for veterans only, this one is uniquely for non-veterans. You'll transform military uniforms into paper as a means for sharing stories, learning new the techniques of pulp printing and building community. Your instructors--two Iraq War veterans--will facilitate discussions about war, art and the military using the crafts of hand papermaking and writing as catalysts for discourse. Each participant will make multiple sheets of paper (blank or pulp painted). All materials, including uniforms, will be provided. Open to all skill levels, and all images will be communally-produced rather than unique to each participant. For non-veterans only.

    *Please note, paper must dry for several days after conclusion of workshop. You are welcome to come back to pick it up or you can have your paper mailed to you for an extra fee

    Screen Printing Basics with Dave DiMarchi

    Explore the ins-and-outs of basic multiple color screen printing! Using a combination of simple digital techniques and hand-printing, artists will tackle the intricacies of screen printing with ease, and leave with a new set of skills --and an edition of prints! This workshop will consist of easy-to-follow demonstrations, hands-on printing, and all the technical know-how to get your images press-ready—including layered color separation, file preparation and working with photo emulsion for crisp and clear stencils! Working with water-based inks and simple tools, this workshop is perfect for artists looking to explore a new medium or finally learn what all the screen printing fuss is about! Beginners welcome and encouraged

    Owning the Mark with Maria Pisano

    Paste papers are a gateway to creating unique patterned papers for one's own artist practices. We will investigate the myriad possibilities inherent in this media: paints, choice of papers/boards, materials, formulas, edition printing and more. Participants will delve into the creation of unique surface patterns with the use of multiple implements: found objects, cutting one's own stamps, stencils, and an array of direct and indirect modes of making marks. Class discussion will center on the versatility and multi-use of these pages and will culminate in incorporating some of them in bound book of your designs. This workshop is designed for teachers, writers, artists and anyone who loves to create a richer and expansive vocabulary for their work.

    Traditional and Experimental Paper Marbling with Keith Garubba

    Wednesday and Friday July 24th and 26th, 10-4pm

    This class focuses on the mesmerizing process of Paper Marbling, a craft that has a deep-rooted decorative tradition, yet plenty of room for discovery.  Participants will create striking and professional-looking marbled papers that may be used in paper-craft or fine-art projects. Students will also leave with the skills necessary to prepare their own marbling materials and a few DIY marbling tools of their own. This survey workshop will cover the following: Water-based marbling methods, Suminigashi, Turkish Marbling, and Experimental Marbling. This is designed as an introductory experience in marbling, but will leave plenty of room for learning and experimentation even if you have some experience already.
