    About the Instructor:

Kristian Battell is an artist practicing in Jersey City, NJ. She completed her Masters of Fine Art at the School of Visual Arts in New York, NY. Battell always considered herself more of a traditional printmaker, having a BFA in Printmaking and Art of the Book from Purchase College, but the pandemic has shifted her practice to sculpture and installation. These sculptures focus on climate change and upcycling the materials that surround her in her everyday life. She loves bringing this practice to a wider audience through her installations and teaching about our impact on the environment and the change we can make through art. Battell has had solo exhibitions at the Montclair Art Museum (Montclair, NJ) and Warren Community College (Washington, NJ). Select group exhibitions include the International Print Center of New York (New York, NY), Local Projects (Long Island City, NY), SlowBurn (NYC), Mana Contemporary (Jersey City, NJ), Art150 (Jersey City, NJ), Ely Center of Contemporary Art (New Haven, CT), Ice Cream Social (Port Chester, NY) and the Montclair Art Museum (Montclair, NJ). She has been artist-in-residence at ChaNorth, Frans Masereel Centrum, Newark Print Shop and Index Art Center. Over the course of three months, we will work together as a group to each create a large-scale woodcut. The maximum size for the woodcut will be compatible with our Charles Brand press, allowing us to print on a block measuring approximately 35” x 54”, or smaller, 24" x 48" or equivalent. The first two meetings will be held virtually, where we will discuss the history of woodcuts and contemporary practices, as well as develop our imagery. In the third meeting, we will gather in person as a group to transfer our images onto the woodblocks and go over carving techniques. The fourth and final meeting will occur two months later, giving each participant ample time to carve their woodblocks. At this final meeting, we will come together again to print each woodblock, assisting one another in the printing process. This class also includes an additional 6 hours of studio time that participants can use at their discretion during Frontline Arts' business hours. Frontline will provide the studio space, inks, solvents, newsprint, and a limited supply of paper or fabric for printing.

    Students provide:

Frontline will provide a portion of the materials needed for this course. Separately, students must provide their own carving tools, woodblocks, and paper or fabric for final prints. Selections will be discussed during virtual meetings.

Cut to the Chase: Deep Dive into Reduction Linocut

    Mondays, March 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th. 6:00 - 8:30 PM

    Members: $210, Non-Members: $225

    Material Fee: $40

Discover the image-making, layering, and color possibilities of reduction linocut printmaking, while learning the tips and tricks of this challenging medium. Working with simple tools and techniques, as well as exploring the possibilities of color, artists will create an edition of three (or more)-color prints over four sessions. Some experience is suggested; beginners are welcome.

    Students provide:

    One Speedball (or similar) Linoleum Cutting Handle + Gouges (1, 2, 3, 5 & 6)

Resource images: The imagery you provide can be as simple as clip art-style, to something more complex like a photograph, writing, a constructed image/collage, or you can work abstractly. Whatever direction you choose, you’ll be working with this same image throughout our time together. You should provide the imagery printed out onto standard copy/printer paper in either color or grayscale/black and white, at 5x7”. Of course, you are also welcome to work directly on the block after seeing the demonstration and sample images. You may find yourself inspired to work more off the cuff once at the workshop. The more variety of resource images you provide, the better, as some images may not work for this process.

    • Roll of Paper Towels

    • Apron

    • Pencil + Eraser and something in which to take notes

    • Extra Fine Point Sharpie

    • One Pad 9x12” Newsprint for transporting prints to and from the studio

She is currently a teaching artist at Frontline Arts, the Montclair Art Museum, and the Visual Art Center of New Jersey.

We will explore mono-printing with foam and gel plates, collagraph-making, stamp-making, puzzle linocuts, and open work time. Attending parent or guardian participation is required for each child. Each session will feature a different method of layering water-based ink or acrylic paint to create a print that follows a socially aware prompt. Then, each pair (kid + adult) will decide what image to make using the technique explored that day. At the end of the allotted time, the group will take turns sharing their final print, explaining why they chose it and what they learned.
